AUGUSTA, Ga. — After a long, often chaotic first part of the week, the 86th Masters gets underway today with as much anticipation as one can remember a major championship carrying. Much of that obviously revolves around Tiger Woods teeing it up for the first time since his horrific car accident in February 2021, and he’s taken almost all of the oxygen out of August National for the last three days. However, there are plenty of other storylines that will begin to unfold starting Thursday morning.
Chief among those is Rory McIlroy’s bid for his first Masters and the elusive career grand slam. Asked about this Wednesday, his answer was tremendous:”I love Augusta National. I love the Masters. I’ve had wonderful times here and not so wonderful times. But I keep coming back every year, and I’ll keep coming back as long as they’ll let me.” That’s how many people feel about the Masters, and it’s likely that one more name — perhaps Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas or McIlroy himself — will this year be added to the list of folks who will be able to keep coming back forever.

Tiger makes par at the fourth hole after a nice two putt. On through the difficult stretch on the first nine.

Tiger’s swing on the par-3 4th hole looked better, but he’s still struggling a bit with distance control. If he can work those kinks out, he can perhaps put together a nice round today.

Another par on No. 3 for Tiger, and he just doesn’t look very crisp. Again, this is not unexpected from somebody who has not played competitive golf in over 500 days, but it has not been encouraging if you came in believing he could win the golf tournament.

Tiger with a knockdown iron off the tee on the par-4 third hole. Stings it down there within spitting distance on the 350-yard hole. Interesting approach. We’ll likely see a lot of guys today going for it, just as we saw with Joaquin Niemann in the same group.

Tiger Woods’ experience showing early
Hasn’t had the same preparation that most of the field had coming into this week, but Tiger’s experience over the last two-plus decades at Augusta National paying dividends today already. Had to scramble from a tough spot on No. 1 to save par, then on No. 2 hit perfectly into a funnel spot for an easy approach. Just missed a birdie there, so he’s even through two holes.

It’s only been seven strokes, but I don’t think Tiger looks particularly sharp thus far. I didn’t really expect him to after 17 months off, and it doesn’t mean he’s not going to make the cut or play well, but he doesn’t have the early look of somebody who is going to truly thrive this week.

Sick up and down for the Cat on the first. Rolls in a long one to stay even par. Only 71 holes to go.

Dicey first hole for Tiger so far. Drive that fell short right and he comes up short with his approach shot. Certainly not what he wanted out of the gate. Will be a difficult up and down from where he’s currently at.
